In an audacious bid for perpetual power, individuals resort to extreme measures, even resorting to violence, when their grip on authority starts slipping. The recent call for vaccine patents by those who have clung to power in Zimbabwe, despite their failure and human rights violations, raises eyebrows. The very people who oversaw tragic events like the ethnic cleansing genocide and property rights violations are now seeking patents for vaccines, highlighting their hypocrisy and misplaced priorities.

Once hailed as heroes of independence, these leaders have devolved into sadistic tyrants. Their authoritarian regime has thrust Zimbabwe into a dire state, stifling innovation and progress. The clash between their feudalistic approach and the modernization imperative has left industry archaic and the nation stagnant.

While the global community advocates for humanitarian intervention, vaccine donations should suffice. The nation has experienced austerity under the guise of prosperity, amassing mythical surpluses that could be utilized to address vaccine shortages stemming from donations. This economic imbalance is a result of the entrenched political system’s preference for self-interest over the common good.

This ignorance is not new. The same ignorance that fuels the pursuit of a one-party utopia is also responsible for mortgaging the nation’s resources to fend off international pressures. The ultimate goal remains an all-encompassing one-party state. However, a democratic setup fosters transparency and accountability, discouraging corrupt practices and protecting the economy from exploitation.

Democracy can mend Zimbabwe’s wounds. A vibrant and independent media, coupled with an innovative opposition, could have led the nation to produce its own vaccines. Instead, the media has become a mouthpiece for the ruling regime, concealing the ramifications of their oppressive tactics.

A transition of power to the democratic opposition could usher in a new era of healing, rebuilding, and inclusivity. Economic participation would be prioritized, and marginalization of youth and minorities would cease. This would be a step towards national cohesion, a vital ingredient for innovation.

The crux of the matter is that Zimbabwe doesn’t require vaccine patents from external sources. Rather, the focus should be on cultivating an environment where the nation can create its own vaccines. A democratic Zimbabwe, with an effective and innovative opposition, holds the key to unlocking this potential.

As the world watches, the fate of Zimbabwe hangs in the balance. Will the nation continue to be governed by self-serving rulers, or will the call for democracy prevail? The choice between stagnation and progress, between hypocrisy and accountability, rests on the shoulders of those who yearn for a brighter future for Zimbabwe.
