DENYING THE RIGHT TO WATER: ZANU PF’s ROLE
Decades after gaining theoretical independence, Zimbabweans continue to face a dire lack of access to clean and safe water. Shockingly, estimates suggest that as much as 82%-89% of the population is without this essential resource. At the heart of this crisis lies the responsibility of ZANU PF, a political party that has consistently failed to prioritize the well-being of its citizens. With a focus on self-enrichment and a disregard for the growing population’s needs, ZANU PF’s actions hinder water access. Moreover, the party actively impedes any efforts by the opposition to address this crisis transparently and accountably.
CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS VIOLATED
The right to clean, safe, and portable water is enshrined in Zimbabwe’s constitution under Section 77. Every individual has the right to this basic necessity, and the state, which unfortunately is closely associated with ZANU PF, is duty-bound to ensure its fulfillment. However, ZANU PF’s misguided aspirations of a one-party state have led it to conflate its interests with those of the nation. The state, distinct from the party, should be responsible for legislative actions and resource allocation to guarantee this constitutional right.
CHINHOYI’S STRUGGLE: A MICROSCOPIC VIEW
Chinhoyi serves as a microcosm of ZANU PF’s systemic failure to uphold Section 77 of the constitution. The party’s refusal to permit the drilling of boreholes in this region exemplifies its neglectful stance. These boreholes would have brought clean, safe, and portable water to the people, but ZANU PF’s motivation is purely political. Opposition officials, driven by a genuine concern for their constituents, advocated for the boreholes’ creation. This move was met with resistance, as ZANU PF saw it as a threat to its dominance.
SELF-PRESERVATION OVER PUBLIC WELFARE
ZANU PF’s fear of losing its grip on power prevented it from supporting the boreholes’ construction. Success here would have bolstered the opposition’s popularity and jeopardized ZANU PF’s hold on parliament. The party chose its self-preservation over the welfare of the people. Instead of providing clean water to its citizens, ZANU PF preferred a populace in need, one that would remain dependent on its promises and influence.
PARTISANSHIP VERSUS LEADERSHIP
ZANU PF’s behaviour starkly contrasts with the opposition’s approach. While ZANU PF seeks to control the distribution of vital resources along political lines, the opposition stands for inclusivity and impartiality. The opposition’s call for boreholes in neutral areas, accessible to all citizens regardless of their political affiliations, demonstrates its commitment to the people’s welfare.
MOVING FORWARD: A CALL FOR ACCOUNTABILITY
It is high time for ZANU PF to put the needs of the people first. The lack of access to clean water is not only a basic human right but also a fundamental prerequisite for development. ZANU PF’s self-serving actions have hindered progress, perpetuating poverty and dependence. As Zimbabweans continue to suffer due to political maneuvering, the opposition’s alternative approach shines a light on the path towards transparent and accountable governance.
ZANU PF’s negligence in providing clean, safe, and portable water to its citizens reveals a stark disregard for their well-being. By prioritizing its own interests over the nation’s, the party has created a barrier to development and progress. The opposition’s efforts to champion water access for all, irrespective of political affiliations, highlight a more responsible and compassionate way forward. As Zimbabweans aspire for a brighter future, the need for a shift in leadership that prioritizes the people’s welfare over political gains becomes increasingly urgent.
